Gerda Taro

 ***********************
Who is this person? This is a question I ask myself often when I look at photos, but strangely it happens more often when they are women. Unfortunately, through history, women have been ignored for their achievements and contributions to society, relegating them to the role of mothers or partners from a well known or "important" man. So I decided to share with you some women whom I admire (for various reasons) and I consider important to be known or remembered.
Women with courageous attitudes and decisions, contrary to the rules imposed.

From here, I want to express my thanks to all of them, those that I'll tell you about and all those who haven't yet had the pleasure of discovering.

I want to start with Gerda Taro.
Her real name was Gerta Pohorylle, ad was the daughter of polish jews.
She was a photographer and came to Spain during the Civil War to cover the conflict with his partner, André Friedman (known afterwards as Robert Capa). Robert Capa was a pseudonym they both used  to sell their photos, so some of the pictures attributed to André Friedman are really hers.
Unfortunately he died in the battle of Brunete, during the withdrawal of the republican army during a bombing raid from the nazi aviation.
Unfortunately the pictures of the battle were not found. He was 27 when he died and after his death his figure has become blurred and forgotten.

I have told you very little about her but I invite you to research or read about her because her life is short but exciting, and when you see a photo of her you realize it's a woman of now, funny, interesting, someone who could be, perfectly, your friend.

****************************
One October morning, while I stared at the ceiling of my living room, thinking about whether I should or not send illustrations to the Book Fair in Bologna, Lea appeared in my living room (though at that time she called herself Leela). Sitting on the old sofa, with her blond hair and red striped shirt, she looked at me smiling as she swung her feet.
As if we knew each other a long time ago, she began to tell her story. At times it had absolutely no sense what she told me, even I swear that she changed the language, but she kept talking, nonstop, believing I could understand.
It was impossible not to be attracted to some details of her story. I took notes of everything she told me and I got to understand. I thanked her for her visit and wish her all the best, hoping that maybe we meet again in the future.
But ... it doesn't seem that she intended to go ... anywhere. In fact, he took a piece of chocolate from his pocket and began to chew quietly.
I sat down to work, waiting for her to leave once she had finished her chocolate or get tired, but she remained quietly on the couch and smiling occasionally. I find it hard to concentrate and work while she was still there, watching me, so I asked if I could help her in something.
She came running from the couch and sticking out his little nose over the edge of the table she said, "I want to go to Bologna Bookfair".
It was clear that she knew something I did not knew then, but I agreed to her desire. After all, I didn't have a better idea, and the truth is that I was getting fond of her.
I warned her that I couldn't guarantee her to see the Bookfair, but she didn't seem to care. It took us a couple of days to decide the images and characters of the story, as well as technical stuff and colors to use. After little discussion and many tests, at the end, we were happy with the result.
We said goodbye at the post office, I wish her good luck, and hoping to see her again in Bologna.

As she wished, we met at the Book Fair, surrounded by old and new friends.
After Bologna, she has been traveling around Japan visiting various museums and has also been in a major exhibition in Taipei.
On her return, a few months ago, she insisted that we should tell her story in a book. Lea has gone on a trip again, but I'm sure she will visit me sometime to tell her adventures! Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this one.

I have to thank several people that this book is published, but among them I want to point out my editor, Teresa Tellechea, for their support and confidence in the project, and Alberto Sobrino, for his advice and laughter.

Ecole des Loisirs

While in Paris I went to see the exhibition of the French children’s publisher L’École des Loisirs celebrating its 50th Anniversary at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs.
Interesting but very small sample to commemorate its 50 years.
I missed seeing more original illustrations but I enjoyed seeing these Maurice Sendak and Tomi Ungerer's illustrations.
